Woodland Burial

Burial in private ground other than a churchyard or cemetery is not prohibited by law; however, no new private grounds can be opened without planning permission and approval of the local Environmental Health Authority.

In 1996 there were 17 woodland burial grounds in Britain; a year later the number had increased to 52, and by the end of 2004 there were 130 with many more being planned. About 50% of Woodland Burial Grounds are run by local authorities, with others primarily privately owned and managed as businesses. Many public cemeteries now have designed ‘green’ areas within their burial grounds.

Majority of Woodland Burial Grounds are Members of the Confederation of Burial Authorities (CBA), bound by its Code of Practice, and Members of the Institute of Burial and Cremation Administration (IBCA), and agree to abide by the “Charter for the Bereaved” thus giving certain rights to mourners. In accordance with the Registration of Burials Act 1864, all burials in private grounds are registered.

Woodland Burial grounds such as Herongate Wood, Brentwood and Oakfield Wood in Harwich, Essex quite simply provide a peaceful final resting place in a manner that’s friendly towards nature, wildlife and the environment.

The planet needs more broadleaf trees to help stem the deterioration of our atmosphere and many Woodland Burial Grounds achieve this by planting a tree in remembrance of a loved one, instead of a traditional stone memorial. The planting of a tree not only adds to the natural beauty of the countryside, but it also aids in the fight against global warming thus providing the natural habitat for insects, birds and other wildlife.

The coffin, casket or gown permitted by Woodland Burial Grounds must consist entirely of biodegradable materials. Natural fibres, softwoods, cardboard or wicker are all quite acceptable. Chipboard or hardwood, brass or plastic handles, or any other artificial materials are not permitted as these are not biodegradable.
